Water management is an important factor for the University. Therefore, the University has a policy to promote and support students and staff to aware of conservation of energy by set campaign, project and activity on energy conservation. In addition, put more effort on operation of underground water storage ponds, wastewater treatment, and water recycling. Moreover, using of energy saving electrical appliances so that students and staff will change behavior of energy consumption and reduce the use of the wrong equipment which waste energy.

The Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs, also known as the Global Goals, were adopted by all united nation members. The SDGs are integrated, universal and transformative—that is, they recognize action in one area that will affect outcomes in others, and development must balance social, economic and environmental sustainability. Simultaneously, UI GreenMetric World University Ranking is one of the most important organizations which believes that many universities around the world have strong efforts to implement environmentally friendly and sustainable policies and programs. In 2019, the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking has the major important topic which involves the SDGs “Sustainable University in a Changing World: Lessons, Challenges and Opportunities”. The subtopics can be described from Kasetsart University’s concepts as following: Lessons–This suite of lessons looks at the environmental threats to the planet and provides plenty of involving interactive tasks to help people in community understand how they can live more sustainable lives. Particularly, the lesson is defined as one of the most significant procedure to transform the community. Hence, the lesson is one of the most important practices that the university always realizes. Challenges– – Basically, sustainable development is a long- term solution to how the university plans indefinite progress in the future without causing damage to the environment so as to guarantee a safe habitat for the next generations who will continue to develop their economies, societies, and care for the environment with a similar ideal in mind. This satisfies the needs without sabotaging the opportunities of others. The concept covers a broad scope of matters such as environmental, social, and economic development which continues to prove its importance in our lives as it affects all aspects of them.

The challenges are so necessary in current environment and they can help in living a more conscious and altruistic life. Kasetsart University has an effort to conduct knowledge resources by integrating with agricultural, environmental management and so on. Opportunities— The Sustainable Development Goals present a unique and critical challenge for universities around the world. But they’re also bringing to light some of the biggest investment opportunities in a generation. There are big opportunities for purposeful development in the universities’ community. By finding better solutions to some of the challenges which are not only helping to achieve the SDGs; they are also opening up substantial growth opportunities, because they are meeting an unmet need and tapping into long- term demand drivers. From the three significant subtopics are the university’s intentions which are steadily and regularly concerned to construct identity of community in Kasetsart University. As it was mentioned earlier, Kasetsart University has intentionally concerned in what the world has being faced and what the university have to necessarily do. Continuously, there are many university’ s policies that relate to enhance quality living of all people in the university and community around us. The mentioned policies earlier, they are called “Three Paradigms of Transformation” which are the main concerns for developing the university. The paradigms are the key elements to integrate people’ s cooperation surroundings the community and in Kasetsart University. Firstly, the first paradigm is determined as “ Public Service” which is a significant service intended to serve all members of the community. Latterly, the second paradigm relates to Social Engagementwhich includes activity, interaction, social exchange, and lack of compulsion. The university has built the continuum of community commitment to develop this paradigm such as transactional, transitional and transformational engagement.

And the last paradigm is defined as “Agricultural Innovation” which means working process with leading agricultural researchers, businesses, landowners, and farmers to develop the knowledge and technologies that will make modern farming more sustainable, resilient, and productive. Through practical and interactive workshops, farm walks, and on- farm demonstrations, this will help the community to put knowledge into practice. Furthermore, Kasetsart University always realize in constructing a happy, vibrant community, and also making strong social connections that create a sense of belonging. And along with belonging comes a sense of responsibility to support each other. With a strong sense of belonging and knowing other community members will take care of each other comes a sense of peace, security, and meaning. Consequently, the “Three Paradigms of Transformation” are the major factors that can be seen in Kasetsart University’ s activities.

Guidelines for project development in a variety ways are increasing in the future.

4.1.2 The project of water storage in different areas of Kasetsart University.

Thailand is a country that mainly engages in agriculture. Therefore, there is an area that is high level of necessary to use water for agriculture. Due to fluctuating rainfall or climate change, some areas still face the problem of water shortage.

Public Service :

Kasetsart University has realized the importance of the said problem. Therefore, the University has determined a policy to build an area to store water for using of the university and nearby communities, including a campaign to use treated water or water from natural resources instead of tap water. This is in accordance with the main objectives of the energy conservation policy of Kasetsart University as for the reduction of tap water usage and increasing of proportion of reused water, and reducing water shortage problems in nearby areas. This is to ensure that water consumption is balanced with the amount of contained water in that area both present and future. There have been drilling of 9 artesian wells scattered in various areas of the Faculty of Agriculture at Kamphaeng Saen campus for sharing to use in agricultural areas which belonging to Kasetsart University and areas of nearby communities. The artesian wells can pump 156 cubic meters per hour of groundwater and then packed into 5 storage ponds built to hold water, with a total capacity of 32,000 cubic meters. A groundwater storage tanks were built in the area of residence of personnel and nearby communities which working within agricultural area in order to collect groundwater that is pumped from the artesian wells and distributes to the personnel building in the area of the campus, as shown in the picture.

[Figure 4.1.2.1 The storage ponds were built to contain water which pumped from the artesian wells, thendelivered to underground pipes for using in plantation.]

[Figure 4.1.2.2 The storage tank which pumped water from the artesian wells and delivered to the residencearea of personnel.]

Kamphaeng Saen Campus drills storage ponds to contain water for various uses in the area of the campus and surrounding area. The purpose is for consumption and supporting agricultural activities and raising animals around the campus. There are 7 storage ponds built to store water in Kamphaeng Saen campus area, total area of 416 rai, as shown in the picture.

[Figure 4.1.2.3 A map of the 7 water storage ponds within Kamphaeng Saen Campus.]

The Number 1 pond is the largest pond, which a total area of 150 rai, uses to store treated water, then to produce tap water with an average production volume of 48,000 cubic meters / year for using within the campus. All tap water is used in Kamphaengsaen campus produced from pond number 1 (as shown in the picture)

[Figure 4.1.2.4 The Number 1 pond use to produce tap water to consumption within Kamphaeng Saen Campus.]

Aside from producing tap water in Kamphaeng Saen campus area, there are 6 storage ponds that are used to store rainwater and treated water for other usages that support various activities of the university, such as teaching and learning activities, farming, raising animals including reserving water for use, in order to prevent water shortage in dry season etc.

7 reservoirs were drilled in the area of Chalermphrakiat Sakon Nakhon Province Campus to contain rain water for using in the campus and surrounding agricultural area, such as Sakon Nakhon, Kalasin, Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, Nong Khai and Udon Thani (North and South). All 7 reservoirs can contain approximately 1,400,000 cubic meters of water as in the picture. [Figure 4.1.2.5 A map of 7 reservoirs in the area of Chalermphrakiat Sakon Nakhon Province Campus.]

Kasetsart University takes an innovation of water circulating system in growing hydroponic vegetables, breeding Tilapia, including applying recycled water to KU Dairy Center such as cleaning floor, applying to toilet system and washing cars.

Socials engagement:

Growing in greenhouse is a part of The Agricultural Technology Center under cooperation between Kasetsart University, Nakhon Phathom and the agricultural technology Israel leader group supported by Israel government.

Challenge:

Reduce amount of water usage and KU expenditure, promote water recycling project such as organizing a water recycling conservation building contest, which corresponding to KU water resources management and conservation policy, and focusing on water resources sustainability and water use efficiency. In the future, the University is going to take a new innovation for water treatment, to build a local community network, and to exchange water resources management and wastewater treatment know-how to local communities.

Opportunities:

Kasetsart University has carried on government policy on water resources management and conservation, especially in Nakhon Pathom and Sakhon Nakhon. Having realized social policy, a university operates all projects on the concept of sustainability and also promotes agricultural technology system to KU students, staff, and the neighboring community to realize water resources preservation and water use efficiency as well as increase an amount of recycled water usage in all campus and the neighboring community.

Remark : All activities in 4.2 refer to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), otherwise known as the global goals, especially relating to Goal 6 : Clean Water and Sanitation which Improve water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and minimizing release of hazardous chemicals and materials, halving the proportion of untreated wastewater and substantially increasing recycling and safe reuse globally Another significant target of this goal is to Protect and restore water-related ecosystems, including mountains, forests, wetlands, rivers, aquifers and lake

4.3.1 Efficient electrical equipment

Kasetsart University has realized the onset of drought conditions as the prolonged dry season drags on, and has therefore thought about the concept of water saving in agriculture in the most suitable growing conditions for healthy plants. It found that irrigation technology is a solution for agriculture because the technology has supported water-saving and water use efficiency as well as retaining moisture in the soil and helping agriculturists produce quality products to meet the needs of the market. Moreover, it has gathered the technology and cooperated with the neighboring community for exchanging a knowledge of plant irrigation in the concept of water-saving and water use efficiency. Hence, to reach the goal of reducing water in all campus, a university has implemented by using the irrigation technology in terms of suitable growing conditions and water use efficiency, for example, using linear irrigation that can control working functions with electrical battery and computer system.

[Figure4.3.1.1]

Faculty of Agriculture [Suwan farm] has used linear irrigation to corn and millet; this irrigation is suitable for large agricultural area because it can be controlled the working with application system. In addition, a university provides a training in irrigation technology to agricultural network.

Public service:

Kasetsart University, Sakon Nakhon campus has built local community network and has also exchanged knowledge of resources management with the community in order to develop the area through taking irrigation technology to meet the needs of the community and to reduce drought.

Agricultural innovation:

Kasetsart University takes an innovation of irrigation technology and gives a chance to the neighboring community to study the activity such as how to save water with efficiency, balance the soil, store water for dry season, and help agriculturists produce quality products to meet the needs of the market, resulting income earned and produce products all year.

Challenge:

Kasetsart University has planned to extend the community network so as to give more opportunities to locals to learn irrigation innovation, and to promote community participation as well as to find out new innovation for water use efficiency.

Opportunities:

Kasetsart University has cooperated with more government agencies in order to campaign on water management, promote community participation and take new agricultural innovation applied to communities for social sustainability.

4.3.2 Water-saving washing system

The university has a policy on water management for sustainability and has therefore introduced sanitary ware with flushing system that save a lot of water caused by the principle of using new water instead of old water for washing, which not only using a small amount of water but also quick cleaning. The push button for flushing system is on the top of the water tank with two buttons; they can save up to 3 liters of water. And for the automatic flow stop system of the sink and urinal for men, when pressing the button, the water starts flowing for a moment and then stops flowing automatically. This can reduce water consumption more than 75% as follows. [in the Figure 4.3.2] [Figure4.3.2 Water-saving washing system, Automatic flow stop system]

4.3.3 Sensor system

Can detect motion and turn on-off lamps and fans automatically. Wash basin- tap sensor system flows automatically and the flowing water is going to stop immediately when hands are pulled out. The urinal sensor system will have water flowing when someone stands. If there is no standing man, the flowing water will stop immediately. This can reduce water consumption more than 75%. [in Figure 4.3.3]

Public service:

The university has a water management policy, campaigning for KU students and staffs to use water efficiently and maximize benefits for sustainability. In addition, it increases more convenient through introducing sanitary ware with motion sensor system to facilitate the disabled people and the elders who come to use the service.

Agricultural innovation:

The university has chosen sanitary ware that saves water as the main purpose. In addition, there is an innovative water sensor system use in water closet so as to save electricity and water via stopping the operation of electrical system and the water flow.

Challenge:

Kasetsart University realizes an importance of bringing new technology or innovations to develop the university in the future as well as encourages all campus use electrical devices efficiently in order to reduce energy consumption, save water and future budgets.

Opportunities:

Kasetsart University is going to increase an innovation on efficient electrical equipment in the future in order to reduce electricity bills and save resources as well as to support the public who come to use the service within the university to get more convenient.

Remark : All activities in 4.3 refer to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), otherwise known as the global goals, especially relating to Goal 6 : Clean Water and Sanitation which Support and strengthen the participation of local communities in improving water and sanitation management.
